CEO Day@UKM

Introduction

The just completed CEO Day@UKM is the 3rd such event by MPOC. The CEO Day has the objectives of inspiring participants through knowledge and experience sharing by creating a platform for interaction between university students and the invited industry leaders. The programme also acts as a platform to disseminate information on the palm oil industry. As with previous CEO Day, the highlight was the CEO Forum. Five prominent industry leaders from several sectors were invited to share their inspiring career development experience. 

There were 27 exhibitors from both government and non-government organisations who participated at the event. There were also Walk-in Interviews for students organised by several companies and also for student internship placements. Resume drop boxes were also provided to offer internship and job placements opportunities for students.

There were also various intervarsity competitions such as Palm-based Food Product Development Competition, Sustainable Product Innovation from Palm Waste Competition and Palm Oil TikTok Challenge participated by students from different tertiary institutions. Other interactive activities include cooking demonstrations with celebrity chef; Chef Imelda Haris and actor; Bell Ngasri, as well as the Palm Oil Treasure Hunt organised by MPOC.

The CEO Day@UKM was officiated by YBhg Datuk Dr Ahmad Parveez Haji Ghulam Kadir, a member of the MPOC’s Board of Trustee who is also the Director General Malaysian Palm Oil Board. Other dignitaries include Ms Belvinder Sron, Acting CEO MPOC, Prof. Dr. Norhamidi Muhamad, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Income Generation and Development UKM, Prof. ChM Dr Ishak Ahmad, Dean of Faculty of Science and Technology UKM, Dr Ruslan Abdullah, Director of Science, Environment and Sustainability MPOC and Mr Faisal Iqbal, Director of Market and Marketing Development MPOC.

CEO Forum

Five speakers were invited to speak at the CEO Forum. They include Mr. Joseph Tek from Malaysian Palm Oil Association (MPOA), Tuan Haji Burhanuddin from Les’ Copaque, Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Khatijah from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Ms. Hasfahlinda from Dominos and also Mr. Rodney from MunchWorld Marketing Sdn. Bhd. The CEO Forum generated a lot of interactions and this was shown from the Q&A session. Generally there was widespread interest in entrepreneurship among students as shown by the number of questions asked.

Attendance

A total of 1,234 participants attended the CEO Day@UKM. Apart from UKM students, there were also participants from  Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TARC), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), University Kuala Lumpur MICET, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Sunway College, Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UKM), Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), Universiti Malaya (UM), Xiamen University Malaysia, Monash University Malaysia and many others. About 40 students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Padang Piol, Jerantut, Pahang also took part in the event.

Exhibition

The exhibition was held at the foyer area and also inside the hall where CEO Forum was held. We had a mixed group of 25 exhibitors which included major players in the palm oil industry showcasing their palm based products and sustainability aspects of the industry. Among the exhibitors were Profes Lipid Sdn Bhd, Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad, FGV Holdings Berhad, Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), Malaysian Palm Oil Green Conservation Fund (MPOGCF), UKM-YSD Chair for Sustainability and ICHEME Palm Oil Processing SIG-POPSIG among others.

Intervarsity
Competitions

Participants also took part in the intervarsity competitions which include Palm-based Food Product Development Competition, Sustainable Product Innovation from Palm Waste Competition and Palm Oil TikTok Challenge held at the same venue in the afternoon. Universiti Putra Malaysia, UiTM Kuala Pilah Campus, Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Universiti Malaya, Xiamen University Malaysia and Monash University Malaysia emerged as the finalists for Palm-based Food Product Development Competition, Sustainable Product Innovation from Palm Waste Competition. In addition, 28 submissions were received for the Palm Oil TikTok Challenge and 6 videos were selected as winners. The link of the winning videos are as below:

Cooking Demonstration with Celebrities

Two celebrities were invited to feature in a cooking demonstration held in the canopy tent at the parking area next to the venue. They spoke about the benefits of palm oil for cooking and also for overall health. The crowd were entertained by Chef Imelda Haris and Bell Ngasri. Both celebrities also asked questions about palm oil to the audience to make the session more interactive.

Conclusion

The program has successfully attracted a total of 1234 participants. It provides a platform for the university students to touch base with industry players.
