During January-April 2023 period, total Malaysian palm oil export to the Americas region recorded a total volume of 69,776 MT against 43,847 MT which was registered during the same period of 2022 (refer to Table 1). This represents an increment of 25,929 MT or by 59.1%. The increase in MPO export to the Americas region is largely attributed to higher export by the United States which went up to 49,735 MT from 28,093 MT recorded during the same period of last year. This was primarily due to the lifting of the Withhold Release Order (WRO) on imports from Sime Darby in early January.
In terms of product breakdown to the Americas region, the main product being exported to the region during Jan-Apr 2023 period is RBD palm oil accounting for 34% of total exports (refer to Chart 2 and table 3). After RBD palm oil, RBD palm stearin (21%) is another major palm oil product exported into the Americas region, followed by RBD palm olein (17%).

The positive increment of Malaysian palm oil export to the USA came after US CBP lifted a two-year import ban on palm oil and palm products produced by Sime Darby Plantation (SDP). SDP was previously blocked by US CBP from entering the US over suspected abusive labour practices. In February 2023, US CBP determined that SDP products were no longer produced with forced labour. The developing El Niño weather phenomenon is also becoming a real game changer for the US vegetable oil market.
In terms of product breakdown to the US, RBD palm oil, RBD palm stearin and RBD palm olein are the top three products exported to US comprising almost 65% of the overall MPO export to US (refer to table 4). Export of RBD palm oil increased by 467.2%, RBD palm stearin increased by 8.7% while RBD palm olein increased by 133.7%.

Canada, another important market for MPO in this region, has been consistently importing palm oil from Malaysia for years. Total MPO export increased by 16.6% to 4,633 MT during Jan-Apr 2023 period from 3,971 MT registered during same period last year (refer to Table 6). The largest export was RBD palm olein accounting for 36.1% of total MPO import by Canada. This is followed by double fractionated RBD palm olein at 1,452 MT, registering a rise by 127.8% on year-to-year basis and by PFAD at 1,150 MT.
