During January-September 2023 period, total Malaysian palm oil export to the Americas region recorded a total volume of  140,047 MT against 170,925 MT which was registered during the same period of 2022 (refer to Table 1). This represents a decline of 30,878 MT or by 18.1%.

In terms of product breakdown to the Americas region, the biggest product being exported to the region during January -September 2023 period is RBD palm oil accounting for 31% of total exports (refer to Chart 2 and table 3). Among the major importers of RBD palm oil are the USA (33,067 MT), Chile (2,701 MT) and Guyana (1,305 MT).

The second largest component of Malaysian palm oil imports was RBD palm stearin (21%), followed by RBD palm olein (14%). Major destinations for Malaysian RBD palm stearin include the USA (26,480 MT), Trinidad (1,067 MT) and Argentina (643 MT). Exports of RBD palm olein were mostly going to the USA (11,067 MT), Canada (4,934 MT) and Trinidad (1,892 MT). NBD palm olein is another major export product, mainly purchased by the USA (9,950 MT).

The decline in MPO export to the Americas region was largely attributed to lower purchase from the biggest buyer in the region, the United States (US). During January-September 2023 period, total MPO exports to the US went down to 88,778 MT from 125,254 MT recorded during the same period of last year (refer to Table 4).

In terms of product breakdown to the US, RBD palm oil, RBD palm stearin and RBD palm olein are the top three products exported to US comprising almost 79.5% of the overall MPO export to US (refer to table 4). Export of RBD palm oil decreased by 7.2%, RBD palm stearin decreased by 28.4% while RBD palm olein decreased by 58.9%.

Domestic consumption of soybean oil in US has increased along with higher rapeseed oil and tallow consumption. In US, biodiesel accounted for more than half of soybean oil usage in the biofuel sector. The recent uptrend of domestic demand has resulted in a reduction of soybean oil end stock. Total US export sales to China are steeply behind a year earlier. Other than palm oil, Malaysia also exported palm-based oleo, palm kernel oil, finished products and biodiesel to the US (refer to table 5).

Canada, another important market for MPO in this region, has been consistently importing palm oil from Malaysia for years. Total MPO export increased by 21.4% to 10,443 MT during January -September 2023 period from 8,601 MT registered during same period last year (refer to Table 6). The largest export has been RBD palm olein accounting for 47.2% of total MPO import by Canada. Second largest import product is super palm olein at 2,786 MT, registering a rise of 125.8% on year-to-year basis, followed by PFAD at 1,775 MT. Other than palm oil, palm-based oleo is another product group majorly exported by Malaysia to Canada (refer to table 7).
