The EU bloc nations imported a total of 764,117 MT for January – September 2023 from Malaysia, worth RM3.3 billion. The EU bloc nation import of Malaysian palm oil declined as much as 28% Y-o-Y, amounting to 303,994 MT. The decline in export volume also resulted in reduced export value YoY from RM6.2 billion to RM3.3 billion.
The Netherlands remained the biggest export destination of Malaysian palm oil from January until September 2023 for the European region. The Netherlands imported as much as 372,017 MT of Malaysian palm oil worth RM1.57 billion. The Netherlands retains a consistent decline in importing palm oil from Malaysia, with a significant decline of 35% Y-o-Y. Italy also recorded a similar decline of 27% Y-o-Y, with an import volume of 144,644 MT. Sweden recorded an import of 89,333 MT from Malaysia, a decline of 3.67% Y-o-Y. The overall decline in imports is attributed to favourable crops for rapeseed in Romania and Czech Republic, contributing to a steady supply, in addition to favourable prices of sunflower oil from the Black Sea region. Due to the ongoing investigation towards imports of biofuels of Chinese origin, imports of used cooking oil (UCO) from China had dramatically reduced. Data from Oil World indicated that between January to August 2023, EU imports of UCO originating from China recorded a total of 244,000 MT, compared to the same period of 2022 at 555,000 MT. In contrast, between January to September 2023, data from MPOB had shown Malaysia had exported a total of 279,596 MT of palm oil mill effluent and 49,639 MT of UCO to the EU, an increase of 194% and 13% respectively compared to the same period in 2022, signalling a demand gap for waste-based biofuels feedstock in the market.
The export performance of Malaysian palm oil into the Eastern Europe and Central Asian region for January – September 2023 was promising with 50,270 MT, an increase of 18% Y-o-Y. The Malaysian palm oil that has been exported in this period to the Central Asian region is worth RM233 million. As with the previous months, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan are observed to lead the highest palm oil import from Malaysia with 28,456 MT and 13,534 MT, respectively. Uzbekistan has surpassed its import of Malaysian palm oil in 2022, indicating a very strong demand from its industries.
