MPO exports to India during January –September 2023 marginally decreased by 2.79% from 2,073,000 MT to 2,015,190 MT mainly contributed by the easing of Indonesian export policy. Palm oil intake from Indonesia during this period increased by 44% YoY to 3.93 million MT compared to 2.72 million MT imported during the same corresponding period of last year. Imports from Indonesia increased on the back of favourable prices compared to the other major suppliers from Malaysia. This has resulted in the market share of Indonesia in Indian palm oil imports increasing from nearly 40% to 56% taking back the position of major supplier from Malaysia.

Total imports of soft oils (SFO and CDSBO) increased by 27% YoY to 5.55 million MT compared to 4.38 million MT imported in the previous year. Sunflower oil imports during January – September 2023 were higher by 76% YoY to 2.5 million MT compared to 1.41 million MT imported in the previous year and soybean oil imports increased marginally by 3% YoY to 3 million MT. Narrow premium or discount of SFO over rival vegetable oils have led to the surge in imports during this period.
